Semiotics

Ferdinand de Saussure is the man who created the mainstream early understandings of linguistics and semiology. Saussure argued that the sign was the basic unit of language, which consisted of two parts being the signified and the signifier

Semiotics, put simply, is the study of how an idea or object communicates meaning, what meaning it communicates and which associations it brings forth. In semiotics, meaning is considered through the interplay between a signifier — the representation of a concept — and the signified — the concept itself.

Semiotics can be used in Marketing

In semiotics, meaning is built via the relationship between the representation of a concept (the signifier — the word “coffee,” to use the previous example) and the concept itself (the signified — the actual drink, plus all those other associations).

The making of brands on boxes for items being sold for eg chocolate, coffee, etc. etc the list goes on

“Louzhou’s States” in graphic design, theory goes further. In postmodernism period, designers use graphic design as self-expression, and we can see actual faces and face masks appear more often in their works, rather than just face symbols. By replacing, covering and moving around faces, we can achieve more emotion and imagination engagement from viewers

How to apply semiotic theory to Character design?

In semiotic theory designing, semiotics in graphic design is the use and dominance of signs for artistic work. The signs must be appropriate to their intended use, and they must represent an object under interpretation. Semiotics introduces simplification procedures in graphic designs.
